UNIMARKT. A SUCCESS STORY

Unimarkt began small and expanded gradually. The foundation for success was laid in the early 1970s. UNITAS became UNIMARKT in 1975. Today, UNIMARKT operates 130 locations across five federal states in Austria.

1970-1983

Regional wholesalers in Upper Austria formed “Vereinigte UNITAS Großhandel Oberösterreich GesmbH” (VUOG).

Two hundred fifty private food retailers operated under the UNITAS brand. UNIMARKT was founded in 1975 to counter the decline of grocery stores. By 1983, Pfeiffer Großhandel Traun took over UNITAS, initiating restructuring.

1983-1995

The branch network was reduced from 46 to 15 locations. Strategic reorientation began, leading to success. In 1995, UNIMARKT achieved sales of one billion schillings (€72.7 million).

1999-2006

UNIMARKT developed Austria’s first real franchise system, taking over nine franchise partners in 1999. By 2006, UNIMARKT celebrated its 30th anniversary and opened its 100th branch.

2009-2014

With 112 locations, UNIMARKT celebrated 35 years in 2009. In 2013, UNIMARKT expanded by converting Zielpunkt branches in Upper Austria, reaching 130 locations. The UNIMARKT online shop launched in 2014.

2015-2020

UNIMARKT celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015, opening Austria’s first nationwide delivery via an online shop.

Expansion into Burgenland occurred in 2016. The 50th franchise location opened in 2017, and the company was renamed UNIMARKT Gruppe GmbH

UNIMARKT committed to climate neutrality in 2018 and launched a new brand identity in 2019. In 2020, UNIMARKT celebrated 45 years and 25 years of franchising.
